Which is better for towing and payload?
Suitable grades of both publish 3,500kg towing. D-Max publishes 925–1,310kg payload across cited bodies; Hilux varies by exact configuration and BEV is 715–855kg. Subtract the service body, people, tools and tow-ball load.
Body and powertrain choice
Both support work bodies, but Hilux spans more powertrain routes: diesel, selected 48V-assisted diesel and BEV. D-Max keeps one 3.0-litre diesel proposition. High annual kilometres, charging access and body need should lead—not a generic fuel-saving claim.
Rural work and support
Both offer 4WD choices. Compare tyres, low-speed control, water and dust exposure, local dealer access, service intervals and recovery. For remote work, the written downtime plan can outweigh a small equipment difference.
Price and warranty
Hilux starts from a recorded $49,990 TDP; D-Max from $54,990 plus ORC, but the entry configurations differ. Toyota and Isuzu both use conditional ownership programmes. Separate standard warranty from service-activated or time-limited offers.
