Which is better for towing and payload?

Suitable Ranger and Hilux diesel or Ranger PHEV grades publish 3,500kg braked towing, but Hilux PreRunner and BEV configurations are lower. Towing frequency, GCM, tow-ball load and the remaining payload after people and accessories matter more than the shared headline maximum.

  • ✓Use the exact configuration's payload and combination limits
  • ✓Weigh the tray, canopy, racks and tools
  • ✓Test the real trailer route rather than one unladen drive

Which work body and powertrain suits the job?

Ranger offers single, super and double cabs plus diesel and PHEV routes. Hilux offers cab-chassis and wellside configurations across diesel, selected 48V-assisted diesel and limited-production BEV. Builders and rural operators should start with body and access; urban service trades with depot charging can then test whether electrification adds practical value.

Ranger Hybrid, Hilux 48V and Hilux BEV are different

Ranger Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid with a published 49km NEDC electric range and up to 6.9kW Pro Power Onboard. Hilux 48V assists its diesel but does not plug in. Hilux BEV is fully electric with 245–315km NEDC by body, 2,000kg towing and 715–855kg published payload. Do not compare those NEDC figures with WLTP claims as if they share one test.

Price the completed ownership package

Ranger pricing is recorded as RRP and Hilux pricing as Toyota Driveaway Price, so the labels are not automatically like-for-like. Itemise ORC, body, canopy, tow kit, charging equipment, servicing, finance or lease terms, delivery and downtime support before choosing.
