What changes on Shark 6 Performance
BYD New Zealand says Performance increases output by 30kW over Premium to 350kW, raises torque by 50Nm to 700Nm and lifts braked towing to 3,500kg. The variant was announced at $76,990 plus on-road costs, with initial customer deliveries from May 2026.
Those figures make it easier to place Performance beside mainstream diesel and hybrid towing shortlists, but a maximum rating is only the start. Confirm towbar rating, trailer brakes, tow-ball download, gross combination mass, axle loads and remaining payload for the exact vehicle.

Tradie and rural use case
The strongest case is a buyer who values the Premium model's plug-in hybrid and V2L proposition but genuinely needs more towing headroom or output for demanding rural and commercial use. Run a loaded demonstration over a representative route rather than relying on an unladen test drive.
BYD notes that a New Zealand Class 2 licence is required for towing loads over 2,500kg. Buyers should confirm licensing and all legal operating requirements for their exact combination.
Performance vs Premium
Compare the $7,000 announced list-price difference against the work benefit. If the normal trailer is comfortably within Premium's limit, Performance may not improve productive capacity. If the job regularly approaches the higher rating, model the complete combination and verify remaining payload before deciding.
